RECENT NEWS - Edward Garnier Celebrates Harborough's Own Stilton

Edward Garnier, MP for Harborough, attended a Dairy UK Cheese event in the House of Commons last week at which some famous English cheeses were on display. Amongst them was Quenby Stilton made at Quenby Hall in Leicestershire’s Harborough District by Freddie de Lisle who has revived the making of Stilton at Quenby where it is claimed Stilton was first made in the county.

Edward Garnier said: “There are many excellent English cheeses that stand comparison with other European cheeses. It is a great mistake to think that only the French know how to make good cheese and one reason for saying that is Quenby Stilton. Leicestershire has so much to offer in the way of cheese with Stilton from Long Clawson and Cropwell Bishop in the Belvoir Vale as well as now from Quenby - in addition to Red Leicester which is also made in the Vale. We really can say that Leicestershire is the home of good food and drink: Melton pork pies, Everards beer, Stilton and Red Leicester, great beef and lamb all fine examples of what is made in the county. I was delighted to be able to celebrate Leicestershire’s fine tradition of good cheese-making.”
